Spring

Dawn broke...

Rose and blue...

We awoke...

They did too...

The Ravens....
they waited... as did we...

They called....
and cried... with outright glee....

The air was peach... They knew the day.......

"A Celebration's called for"... I heard them say...

"We'll dance with the starfish...  A song we'll Sing ....

We've waited all winter.... for the first day of SPRING !!!!!!!! "

photos taken by Gwen Buchanan, from the top of the bluff at our home in St. Martins, New Brunswick, looking to the east and out over the Bay of Fundy.

Lovely story your photos told. Yes, the first day of Spring IS something special. I read on another friends blog this morning, a poem by Robert Frost, some lines from " Prayer in Spring"

"Oh, give us pleasure in the flowers today and give us not to think so far away as the uncertain harvest, keep us here all simply in the springing of the year.

This is so gorgeous Gwen. These photographs are a meditation, a prayer.
I love that deep pink line against the blue and that tiny, tiny light from that boat in the distance. And then everything turns to peach and silouettes the ravens on the trees. How much more beautiful this must have been in real life! Thanks for sharing this moment.

What a beautiful sky Gwen - and super photos of those ravens. I also love your crow picture at the side of your blog. The crow is my favourite bird - I think they are much maligned. Happy first day of Spring.

Lucy, You are so welcome... I really enjoyed my tour through your blog once more.. the history that you roam in, is not to be seen in our young country... I'm enthralled by those old structures!

Hi dowhatyoulove, Thank you.... I am still thinking about that gorgeous tote bag you made.. it was beautiful... and I can't wait to plant a few seeds somewhere if I can find a patch of dirt with no snow...

Oh thank you Weaver, I love Crows and Ravens too... I also think they are so intelligent... always on watch.. they were gathering mosses and sticks today and taking them off to the nest sites.. I love watching them do this...

How wonderful to have ravens as neighbors!

Is that you house? It looks huge, so much space, I am very envious. I love the shape of the windows.

It looks like you have an amazing environment in which to create.

Gwen Buchanan said...

Thank you Janice.. The rising sun on the water is one of my biggest joys of living here..

Hi Annette, The village is isolated but the joy of nature makes up for the conveniences of the city... I told the Ravens, Hello for you!!

Ruth, I know you would be overcome with it too... it is like a celebration almost every morning!

Acornmoon, I adore these ravens... There is such vast forest behind our house towards the interior of New Brunswick plenty of wildlife live there... Yes we built our house over a period of 8 years living amongst the construction as we went along... it was messy but I would recommend it...

Thanks Cathy, the second floor light is my studio.. I am up there most of the time working and playing...

Pg, I am happy to say that Most of the Raven families stay all winter... such intelligent birds!!
All the best of the new season to you and to your garden plantings...

Hi Rauf... you write like a pro.. you are very humble... Happy Spring...

Gwen, that hot pink line has such impact! What gorgeous photos and a beautiful home.

The shot of the birds brings back memories. When we lived at Cap Lumiere, the birds would break into thundrous cacaphony at 4:00 in the morning. I've slept through a jackhammer on the side walk beside my bedroom window in the city, but those birds woke us up every summer morning with their giddy joy announcing another day. I had to admire their enthusiasm- would have been much more admirable if I was a morning person ;)

Gwen Buchanan said...

Hi TwistedSister.. oh my you don't have to comment with any deadline in mind.. just drift over any ol time when things aren't busy... and relax...

Thanks Sandy, You keep track of so many birds out your way... I would love to get some shots as close to them as you do..

Melanie, I wish you some cool fresh mist to celebrate the change of season... I think we need some heat as badly as you need cool.. The weather is getting extreme...

Roxanne, Hallelujah!!! as Tom Petty says... the waiting is the hardest part...

Shayla, Something familiar about what you say.. Where I lived before in the country the trees were very close to the house and the birds gathered there every morning singing their little hearts out... I noticed a difference when I moved to the city for a couple years.. there was so many solid structures close together and so much of a dull din it was like white noise and I could never pick out individual bird songs... I could hardly hear a siren go by... funny about that isn't it..

I can tell you are so happy that spring is here Gwen! What a wonderful series of photographs. I love the one of your house especially. And those colorful skies!
I just spent the first day of spring in Amsterdam with my son, which was a little strange. (The first day of spring, not being there with my son!)

amazing photos as always,Gwen!I wish you happy and wonderful spring ful of inspiration and positive things!
I'm very busy last days but few ideas are buzzing in my head and I only have to catch the time..

Gwen Buchanan said...

Hi Lynn, thanks for the visit.. Your quilt work is amazing... I love all the explorations you do...

Hi Debbi, What must it feel like to be in Amsterdam on the first day of spring?... Were the tulips up? Was it warm?

Chris, I never thought of that.. you're right.. I'll have to tell John and get his reaction... Thanks for the observation..

Hi Jo, Fall must be welcome after such a hot summer... I am thrilled by the recent work you are doing... the boxes and these new books....so gorgeous!
It is making me antsy to get to the play part and not have to work to deadlines...ideas keep fluttering past like butterflys... Happy Fall to you!!!

Thank you Dada, have the little wall lizards been out sunning themselves yet? Sometimes things get so busy don't they?.. that is the way I feel right now.. I wish I could slow down a bit and delve farther into the things I am doing.. it makes it all such a tease... Can't wait to see what's been floating about in your mind!!!

Leslie said...

Wonderful photos, and such a beautiful place you live. Ah, yes. Spring.

Delphine said...

Oh Gwen, that is so beautiful! Did you plan this posting and set the alarm, or did you have a sleepless night? I have visions of you wandering "lonely as a cloud" with your white nightie floating out behind you, your camera clutched in your hand!Your house is lovely!

Debbi said...

Gwen, it was warmer in Amsterdam than it currently is in Boston, but that's not saying much. I still wore my long, down-filled coat everyday.
The crocuses, hyacinths and daffodils were starting to bloom, and the tulips were probably about 3 weeks behind them. It was very pretty. And trees and shrubs were about to burst out. Maybe someday I'll be able to go back and time it right to see the fields of tulips. Do you have any bulbs or tulips growing in your yard?

Gwen Buchanan said...

Thank you for coming, Leslie... St.Martins is a very calm, quiet, spectacular, piece of the earth... It hypnotized me when I first came here and I can never leave...

Oh my Delphine you give me too much credit if you think I plan my postings ahead of time.. I just work on the fly.. seat of the pants as they say.. the alarm goes off at 6:30am as my son has to get ready to catch the bus for school... I was out about in my robe though but we have no close by neighbors... If I miss the sunrise I'm not right for the whole day, cause when it is good... it's very, very good!!!

Debbi, I'm glad at least the flowers were beginning to bloom when you were there...I always want to rush Spring to the warmer days but they will only come when they are ready.. I have some daffodils but the earliest blooming shrub I have is the Daphne... I look forward to this as it is so sweetly fragrant and it right by my patio door... most of my flower plantings are perennials and shrub roses... as long as they are easy care they can live in my gardens...
What's in your garden?

Yep, still waiting. Snowed hard here.

Hi Rhonda, So Lovely of you to come visit.. This "Passion for Painting Award" is so thoughtful of you and you are much too generous... Thank-you... I appreciate it very much!!!...Did you hear the ravens calling all the way down in Kentucky.. They are loud aren't they?

Debbi said...

I've planted hundreds and hundreds of crocus bulbs, only to find them devoured by Chipmunks and Squirrels. Last year I planted some combinations of tulips/crocuses, narcissus/grape hyacinths and allium, and I made sure they were safe and sound under chicken wire and I had much better results. But this year I've already noticed a bunny has nibbled the tops off of one patch of tulips/crocuses. Alas, it's a never ending battle to get to enjoy the bulbs before the animals do!
